• Hanover County, VA Man Killed After Truck Strikes Tree Early Saturday (countryherald.com) — A 21-year-old Mechanicsville man was killed early Saturday when his pickup left Brooking Way and struck a tree, with Hanover Fire-EMS pronouncing him dead at the scene. The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating what caused the crash and is asking anyone who saw it or has information to contact investigators. 
• 18-year-old critically injured after shooting in Mechanicsville (wric.com) — An 18-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot late Saturday night in a parking lot off Bell Creek Road in Mechanicsville, Hanover County. Deputies say an altercation between two groups inside a nearby business escalated outside, where multiple shots were fired and suspects believed to be from outside Hanover fled. Anyone with information is urged to contact the sheriff’s office or Crime Stoppers.
• Drunk raccoon in liquor store is repeat offender (boingboing.net) — A mischievous raccoon that broke into a liquor store has unexpectedly poured more than $200,000 in donations into Hanover County Animal Control, thanks to viral attention and memes. The animal, a repeat offender also suspected in other building break-ins, was rescued and released after being found drunk and passed out in a bathroom. Officials say the lighthearted saga has helped people connect with the human side of animal control work.
