City of Sumner Declares Upcoming Police Week to Honor Law Enforcement Officers
In a proclamation signed on Monday, the city of Sumner declares the week of May 12 through May 18 as Police Week and Wednesday, May 15 as Peace Officer Memorial Day.

Sumner city leaders encourage citizens to thank their local law enforcement officers for the work they do in protecting the community through a proclamation signed during the Sumner City Council meeting on Monday.
The full proclamation is below:
WHEREAS, law enforcement offrcers play an essential role in ensuring our safety and in safeguarding our rights and freedoms; and

WHEREAS, officers partner with citizens to keep our community as safe as possible, whether that's by enforcing traffic laws, proactive policing, or by forming neighborhood watch groups; and
WHEREAS, when an unsafe situation arises, officers are the first to respond and provide assistance, often at great risk to their own personal safety; and

WHEREAS, Sumner Police Department has become a leader in providing victim's
assistance by providing support for victims and apprehending suspects; and
WHEREAS, Sumner police offrcers continue to face increased danger in the performance of their official duties; and
WHEREAS, in 2012 Sumner police officers responded to over 15,000 calls for service, arrested 615 suspects, made over 2900 traffic stops, removed 70 impaired drivers from our roadways, and also participated in over 20 community events and parades; and
WHEREAS, the Congress and President of the United States have established May 15, 2013, as Peace Officer's Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as National Police Week,
NOW, THEREFORE, the City of Sumner proclaims May 15, 2073, as Peace Offrcer Memorial Day and the week of May 12th through May 1 8th as Police Week in the City of Sumner and urges all citizens to mark this occasion with appropriate ceremonies, commemorating police officers, past and present, who by their faithful and loyal devotion have collectively preserved our rights and security.
