First, just after 10 a.m. a Bonney Lake police officer saw a stolen 1997 Honda Civic in the Fred Meyer parking lot. The car had reportedly been reported stolen the night before in Tacoma.
After confirming that the car was stolen, the officer then approached the vehicle, but deputies say on his way "shots were fired" and the car pulled away from the scene. One witness reported that the officer was hit by the car as it fled the scene, though deputies say the officer is unharmed.

About 15 minutes later, a witness called 911 to report that someone had abandoned a vehicle in her driveway along SR 410 in Buckley. Officers investigating the call determined that the car was the same stolen Honda that had fled the Fred Meyers. They then searched the area with K9 units, but thus far no suspect has been arrested.
Because the Bonney Lake officer opened fire during their encounter with the suspect, the Pierce County Force Investigation team has been called in to investigate the incident, as is standard procedure whenever an officer uses their firearm.
