Washington Residents, Business Owners Discuss Trade War

A report from KIRO7 highlights the challenges both residents and business owners in Washington face as a result of increased tariff costs.

BONNEY LAKE, WA — Numerous businesses across the country, including some in Bonney Lake, are expected to take a pretty hard economic hit when President Donald Trump's trade war with China and other countries takes effect in January.

KIRO7 in Seattle on Wednesday shared the stories of Washington business owners working to overcome those challenges, which KIRO7 said have already cost Washington consumers $100 million and stands to cost Washington business owners even more in the coming months.

"We feel like we're going to lose about $130 million of apple money and that's a considerable hit, not only to us but also to our labor force," Fred Davis told KIRO7. Vice president of the Washington Fruit and Produce Company in Yakima and a member of the Washington Apple Commission, Davis added, "Eventually, the consumer has to pay, and we'll try to negotiate around that as best we can."

While he's by no means anti-Trump, Davis conceded the tariff trade war is probably not the best move for the U.S. At least not for him.

"I think he's done a lot of good things for the country and made some very good decisions," he reportedly said. "This, I'm not sure that I'm in favor of."
