Issaquah SD 5th Grader Competes For National Geographic Bee

Newcastle Elementary student Nathan Jackson will test his knowledge in the subject of geography against the best young students in the state in the National Geographic Bee.

Representing the Issaquah School District, Newcastle Elementary School 5th-grader Nathan Jackson will compete tomorrow, April 5 at Pacific Lutheran University for state honors in the National Geographic Bee contest.

The national competition, open to students in grades four through eight who have not reached their 15th birthday, is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.

The state winner will receive $100, the 'Complete National Geographic on DVD' and a trip to Washington D.C. where he/she will represent the State of Washington in the national finals at the National Geographic Society Headquarters, May 20-22, 2013.

The first place national winer will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the Society. The national winner will also travel, all expenses paid, to the Galapagos Islands where they will experience geography first hand through up-close encounters with the wildlife and landscape.
