Sammamish Deputy Mayor Ramiro Valderrama proclaimed May "Arts Education Month" in Sammamish at a May 10 formal reception hosted by the Sammamish Arts Commission at City Hall.
The reception was a celebration of ways both the city and schools in the city are educating the public about local art.
Arts education advocate Lisa Fitzhugh, the event's guest speaker, urged the audience to seek new and innovative ways to incorporate art knowledge in everyday lives. Fitzhugh is the founder Arts Corps Seattle, the largest arts education program in Washington State.
The event featured the unveiling of the “mobile gallery” poster using the city of Sammamish newly aquired QR code technology, "stQRy". The digital application — free for download from iTunes or Google Marketplace — helps users explore the stories and art within Sammamish parks.
Both of the city's school districts also discussed its visual arts programs.
Framed copies of the mayor's proclamation were presented to Lake Washington School District Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce of the Issaquah Schools Associate Superintendent Mr. Ron Thiele, while several school principals and the many volunteer and Staff Arts Leaders from Sammamish area schools looked on.
The reception was videotaped for Channel 21.
