Mercer Island Man Drove Wrong Way Before Deadly Crash: Police

The 20-year-old Mercer Island man allegedly drove down the wrong way down an on-ramp near downtown Seattle.

MERCER ISLAND, WA - Police suspect a 20-year-old Mercer Island man was under the influence of alcohol early Sunday morning when he crashed head-on with another car, killing the driver. Mohamed S. Alhethail, 205, of Issaquah, was hit head-on by an SUV on the ramp connecting I-5 and I-90.

The crash happened just after 3 a.m. Sunday as Alhethail was exiting southbound I-5 onto eastbound I-90 south of downtown Seattle. An SUV driven by Alexander S. Chung, 20, of Mercer Island, was coming down the same ramp in the wrong direction.

Chung's 2018 Subaru Crosstrek hit Alhethail's 1995 Honda Accord wagon head-on. State police spokesman Trooper Rick Johnson said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. The crash blocked the I-90 on-ramp for over four hours.
