Report Ranks Sammamish Washington's Safest Large City

A new analysis of FBI crime data named Sammamish as the safest city in the state with a population above 50,000.

SAMMAMISH, WA — A new report ranks Sammamish as Washington's safest large city, based on an analysis of FBI crime data. The rankings, published Tuesday by AdvisorSmith, looked at the FBI's Uniform Crime Report for 2019 and assigned each city a "crime score" based on the rate of reported violent crimes and property crimes by population. The FBI compiles its data each year but a final report for 2020 is still in progress.

For its comparison, AdvisorSmith organized Washington cities into three groups: those with fewer than 10,000 residents, midsize cities with a population between 10,000 and 50,000, and large cities with more than 50,000 residents.

Each city's overall score was assigned based on the 2019 figures and weighted by the level of more serious or violent crimes, then adjusted based on population. Using that measure, AdvisorSmith found Spokane was the Washington city with the most reported crime in 2019.
