Alum Nonprofit Names Brookfield Central As Possible Allstar Venue

The Bronzeville Allstar Showcase, played by Division 1 committed or prospects, was put together by the Bronzeville Foundation.

BROOKFIELD, WI — An allstar charity basketball game made of Wisconsin high school basketball players will take place on June 20 at 7 p.m., the nonprofit Bronzeville Foundation announced. The Foundation said they are looking at Brookfield Central High School as a centralized venue for the game.

The Bronzeville Allstar Showcase will be played by Division 1 prospects or committed players in their sophomore or junior year. The top 25 players in the state will be involved, including eight from Milwaukee teams. The top four players on the roster so far are:

  • John Lovelace Jr. of Brown Deer High School
  • Leon Bond of Wauwatosa East High School
  • Tayshawn Bridges of Brookfield East High School
  • Danilo Jovanovich of Whitnall High School

Local players like Hayden Doyle of Brookfield East and Andrew Rohde of Brookfield Central will play as well.

Solomon Stewart, chief executive officer and founder of the Bronzeville Foundation, told Patch he found many of the Division 1 players through Durrell Johnson, a Milwaukee basketball trainer.

"We knew while building this roster that we only wanted the top 25 players and for a good amount of players we used our basic connections," Stewart said. Finding high-caliber players became easier after connecting to Johnson through Instagram.

Stewart said that players are still being finalized and that he's still finding elite players who are interested.

Ticket sales will start on Monday, said Cole Barnes, the foundation's communications director. Around 500 people are expected to come.

The money from sales will be donated in part to an underfunded homeless shelter in Milwaukee, Stewart told Patch. The nonprofit is still deciding on which shelter it will donate to.

"We've been talking to a lot of shelters that don't get as much funding as they should from the state," Stewart said. "And they could use some extra money to update their facilities and help the people who reside there."

The Bronzeville Foundation was founded in 2020 by Solomon Stewart, Donovan Hunt, Cole Barnes and Samer Bilal. All four are Brookfield East alums. The Foundation operates as a food rescue, receiving extra food from restaurants and transporting it to homeless shelters to eliminate food waste and food insecurity.

Patch has partnered with Feeding America to help raise awareness on behalf of the millions of Americans facing hunger. Feeding America, which supports 200 food banks across the country, estimates that in 2021, about 42 million Americans may not have enough nutritious food to eat due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
