Cell Tower Proposed in Brookfield Backyards Sees Opposition
A number of residents are opposing a Verizon cell tower that would only be an arm's length away from residents' backyards.

A number of Brookfield residents are strongly opposing a Verizon cell tower that would be built only steps from their backyards.
Verizon plans to construct a single column cell tower to improve its service in the area, reported Patch media partners WISN 12.
The proposed tower would be up to 150 feet tall, 120 feet from the homes and only a few steps from residents' backyards.

Ed Virnig, a Brookfield resident spoke out against the cell tower Tuesday night during a public comment session at the Common Council meeting.

"It's clear that this would be the gold standard for Verizon, but it has little to do with improving the quality of service in the City of Brookfield. Safety issues were never addressed in the meetings we had with representatives from Verizon."
Virnig's arguments included the advancements in technology would ultimately lead to a decrease in revenue for the city, as fewer cell towers would be required.
He also urged the council to consider an alternate site at the recycling center because it's more central to the city. He said the recycling center had adequate land away from homes and would minimize decreases in property values. Virnig also said the recycling center would be a more secure location and noise from air conditioners or generators would not be heard by residents.
Mayor Steven V. Ponto told WISN 12 News the residents are being heard, but the tower plan is still in the works.
