An 8-year-old New Berlin girl who was pulled from the pool at last week remained hospitalized Monday, but her updated condition was not released.

The girl remains at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, where she was taken from Wirth Aquatic Center Tuesday afternoon, Brookfield Police Capt. Phil Horter said Monday.

Her family asked that her condition not be released. She was listed as very critical from Tuesday through Thursday, but police have not updated her condition since.

"The investigation is ongoing. We are not releasing any more details," Horter said in an email to Patch.

Lifeguards pulled the girl from an area of the pool about 4 feet deep about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. She was with about 70 youth with New Berlin's Summer Playground, which travels to Wirth every Tuesday afternoon to swim.

She was not breathing and before a Brookfield ambulance rushed her to Children's Hospital.

New Berlin's summer playground group will not return to Wirth pool Tuesday or July 17 and will evaluate whether to resume in the future its weekly Tuesday afternoon swim field trips to Wirth, New Berlin Parks and Recreation Director Mark Schroeder said in a message Tuesday morning.

The New Berlin Parks and Recreation Department sent a letter July 5 to parents of youth in the Summer Playground program, saying an 8-year-old girl "encountered difficulties in the water."

"The safety of the children in our programs is our top priority," the letter said. "We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this accident and will share additional information as it becomes available.

"At this time, however, our focus is on the child involved and her family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."
