Police Reports: Few Violations of Burning, Fireworks, Sprinkling Rules

The latest police reports show most residents are abiding by the city's continued ban on outdoor burning and fireworks and rules on outdoor watering. A few citations have been issued.

The latest police reports showed few violations:

Fireworks

Police received numerous complaints about fireworks illegally being set off around the Fourth of July holiday. But only once were officers able to find the violators. A 44-year-old Brookfield man was cited for violating fireworks ordinances and officers confiscated the remaining fireworks after police saw children setting them off about 6:45 p.m. July 3 near Tru Lane and Oak Hill Lane.

Outdoor burning

At least two people were cited for violating the temporary ban on outdoor burning and fire pits.

A homeowner in the 1000 block of Michael Drive was cited at 9 p.m. July 3 for burning a fire in a rock-lined fire pit.

A woman in the 4600 block of North 135 Street was cited after an anonymous caller complained she was burning in a backyard fire pit about 6:20 p.m. Saturday.

Both residents said they were aware of the city's yard waste burning ordinance and were abiding by those rules, but said they did not know about the temporary ban on all outdoor burning other than grilling food.

Lawn fire

A family was celebrating the evening of the Fourth of July with guests in their backyard pool, when a passerby knocked on their door to warn them that their front lawn was on fire, police reports said.

The fire in the 20100 block of Independence Drive was extinguished about 8:30 p.m. and the cause was unknown. No one was smoking and officers found no signs the fireworks or burning rules were violated.

Sprinkling

A homeowner in the 17500 block of Penbrook Drive was watering his lawn at 5:30 p.m. Friday on a non-watering day, based on the city's even-odd address rules.

The 48-year-old man was given a copy of the rules and promised to comply in the future.
