What Did Your Father Teach You?

It wasn't often that I was in trouble as a kid, but while receiving a gentle lecture from my father during one such episode, he said something my own kids hear often today.

"Everything you do is a choice," he offered.

So yes, even going to school was my choice — so long as I understood that if I chose not to go, my parents could ground me until the End of Time. The message of personal responsibility, and the related consequences, stuck.
