Photos: Winter Storm Coming? Savor Every Last Minute of Warmth

With highs in the mid-50s in mid-January Wednesday, everyone was taking advantage of the crazy weather before the true weather season arrives.

At 1:15 p.m. the temperature read 60 degrees on the Kelly William Realty building on Bluemound Road in Elm Grove.

While the weather forecasters were putting the warmth closer to 55, no one was quibbling Wednesday as construction workers, joggers, dogs and families were out savoring every last dry inch of pavement and grass and every last beam of sun.

According to the National Weather Service, the Snow Miser is about to muscle out his cartoon brother Heat Miser before the sun rises Thursday.

The morning commute could be messy and the evening commute even messier, as forecasters are predicting three to six inches of snow in Brookfield. But it will be slow — maybe two to four inches during the day and another one to two inches in the evening.

Friday could bring a few more snow showers before noon, then just flurries.

City DPW: "All hands on deck"

Think you still can wiggle out another snowless day? No chance: the weather service puts the chance at snowfall Thursday at 100 percent. The mystery, however, will be exactly how much white stuff will we be shoveling and municipal plow trucks pushing?

"It's all hands on deck," said City Public Works Director Tom Grisa.

The city filled its 24 trucks with salt and had them ready to go late Wednesday afternoon. "We'll start at 7 (a.m.), if we don't get called in earlier," Grisa said.

City crews have 250 miles of streets to clear, and they can't start salting before the snow falls. "It's harder because it's going to hit right around the rush hour," Grisa said. "It's better if it hits around 9:30 in the morning."

Grisa cautioned motorists to take it slow and make sure they test their brakes and vehicle's handling, particularly if they driving a new vehicle they've never driven in snow before.

"Think ahead," he said. "Recognize that you're going to have to go slower."
