Wisconsin Army Sgt. Died In Syrian Blast; Is Identified

A Wisconsin resident serving overseas was one of two military personnel who was identified as dying in the line of duty on March 30 in Syria.

Authorities are reporting that U.S. Army Master Sergeant Jonathan J. Dunbar, Waabishkebinesi, 36, was killed on March 30, 2018, in the detonation of an improvised explosive device in Syria. He is the son of Ted and Linda Dunbar. On Friday, Gov. Scott Walker ordered flags to half-staff on Saturday, April 14, 2018, in honor of Master Sergeant Dunbar. Dunbar’s mother is a resident of Ashland, Wisconsin.

Dunbar left behind his wife and two daughters, one son and another daughter on the way, who will be born in May.

Dunbar earned numerous awards and decorations, including three Bronze Stars, four Army Commendation Medals, six Army Achievement Medals, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the Iraq Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the Global War on Terrorism
Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 3, the Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Service Ribbons, the NATO Medal, the Ranger Tab, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Pathfinder Badge, the Military Freefall Jumpmaster Badge, and the Parachutist Badge.
