Franklin Public Library Hosting Community Plant

In lieu of regular garden planting programs, the Franklin Public Library is welcoming the community to a planting/donation event Friday.

FRANKLIN, WI — The Franklin Public Library typically hosts various garden planting programs this time of year, yet most remain canceled due to the pandemic. Instead, the Library is welcoming the community to plant their extra flower and vegetable seeds in the Library's garden at an event Friday, according to Assistant Director Keri Whitmore.

The community is welcomed to come and plant their own extra seeds and seedlings Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The community plant event is a way for the community to still interact with the Library's garden, regardless of the typical courses being canceled this year. In the past, the Library held programs teaching how to plant gardens for food such as pizza and salsa, Whitemore said.

The Library has raised beds that it uses to grow vegetables. Some of the final vegetables will eventually be used in a cooking event in August, according to Whitmore. Extra flower seeds could go toward beautifying the patio, Whitmore continued.

Extra flower seeds and most vegetable varieties are well suited for the garden. Peppers, tomatoes, radishes, beans and other typical Wisconsin vegetables are great for the raised beds, according to Whitmore.

People donating seeds do not necessarily have to plant them but are invited to do so, Whitemore said. The resulting vegetables will be used in events down the line and are open to community usage, but it is not a community garden with individual plots, Whitmore continued.

The Library will not be providing seeds. Event-goers should bring their own extra leftover seeds.

The Community Plant event will be held at the Franklin Public Library gardens and patio from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. The Library is located at 9151 West Loomis Road in Franklin.
