GREENDALE, WI — A yearly Fourth of July tradition in Greendale is still going strong despite the threat of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Wisconsin and the arrival of hundreds of British ships in New York Harbor in 1776.

There will be a public reading of the U.S. Declaration of Independence at 9:30 a.m., on Saturday at the flagpole in front of the Greendale Village Hall, 6500 Northway.

This is year 14 for this public reading, which started in 2007. This year due to the pandemic, some readers will stand on the top steps, while other readers will stand on the bottom steps, in observance of social distancing.

Volunteers will each read a paragraph in turn and continue with the other volunteers assembled. Other speakers and groups have also been invited, organizers said.

The group will assemble at 9:20 a.m. Saturday to determine the order of the readers.
