2018 Election Results: Greendale $33.8 Million Referendum Passes

Earlier this year, Greendale Schools asked the community to invest up to $33.8 million for District-wide facilities improvements.

GREENDALE, WI -- Students and staff at several Greendale public schools will see major upgrades in the coming years after voters overwhelmingly passed a $33.8 million spending referendum to fund upgrades to several buildings.

Tuesday's unofficial results were 5,242 votes in favor, and 2,614 votes opposed.

Earlier this year, Greendale Schools asked the community to invest up to $33.8 million for District-wide facilities improvements representing an annual tax increase of 93 cents per $1,000 of property value.

Detailed planning and design will begin immediately for the projects approved by district residents.

“The Greendale Board of Education, in concert with the school administration and the community
worked diligently for the past few years to plan carefully for the future of educating the children in
Greendale Schools,” said Dr. Gary Kiltz, Greendale superintendent. “We are pleased that the solutions in the academic base plan put forth on the ballot are supported by the electors in the Village.”

Work at Greendale Middle School would be completed during the summer of 2019 according to
preliminary plans. Construction work at all three elementary schools and GHS is projected to be
underway during the 2019-2020 school year, beginning with site work and the installation of new HVAC systems in time for the 2019-2020 school year. Work in these four buildings is projected to be completed for the opening of the 2020-2021 school year.

The referendum includes the construction and renovation of academic, cafeteria and multipurpose room spaces at Canterbury, College Park and Highland View Elementary schools, renovations to athletic, music and tech education areas at Greendale Middle School, and construction of music instructional spaces and an event lobby at Greendale High School.

Security improvements include secure main entrances and parking, traffic flow and site circulation improvements at the elementary schools, in addition to bringing all schools up to compliance with American Disability Act standards. Upgrades to multiple schools' climate-control systems are also included in the referendum.

The tax calculator can be found here: www.greendale.k12.wi.us/referendum. District officials say that the tax impact of the proposed referendum is lower than originally projected, and is now estimated at 93 cents per $1000 of property value.
