Greendale Woman Targeted By Social Security Fraudster: Police

GREENDALE, WI — A Greendale woman said she narrowly averted falling victim to a phone scam in which the fraudster claimed to be a representative from the Social Security office.

According to Greendale police call logs, a Greendale woman came into the police station just after 3 p.m. on Sep. 2 to report that she was the victim of a telephone fraud scheme.

Greendale police told Patch that the woman received a phone call from the Social Security office, which claimed that they needed to verify information from her.

Police said the woman gave the man claiming to be from the Social Security office the last four numbers of her checking account and the last four digits of her social security number.

According to police, the woman suspected the call may have been fraudulent. The woman told police that she told the caller she should come into the office in-person. The woman told police that the caller threatened to call police if she attempted to go into the Social Security office.

After ending the call, the woman froze her bank account so nobody could withdraw money, police said.
