MILWAUKEE, WI — Experienced trick-or-treaters know certain houses just have better candy than others in the neighborhood.

These pros also know that certain houses give out apples and Good & Plenty for some inexplicable reason. Homeowners eager to please the costumed youngins can be prepared as a recent study found the most popular Halloween candy in every state.

CandyStore, an online candy retailer, found each state’s favorite Halloween candy by combing through 11 years of sales data, and focusing on the months leading up to the holiday.

The company also verified the conclusions with major candy manufacturers and distributors, and presented the information of each state’s three favorite Halloween candies and how many pounds of the tasty treats were sold last year.

The most popular Halloween candy in Wisconsin in 2018 was Butterfinger, which sold more than 118,984 pounds.

This year's Butterfinger bars are actually different than the ones handed out during Halloween 2018. That's because Nestle sold more than 20 of its brands - including Butterfinger - to Italian chocolatier Ferrera Candy Company.

Ferrera launched what they called an improved recipe for Butterfinger in early 2019. Company officials said the better Butterfinger bars included larger peanuts that are roasted in-house, more cocoa and milk, and reduced preservatives and hydrogenated oils.

The second-place finisher in our state was Starburst, with 118,572 pounds sold, and Hot Tamales was the third most-popular Halloween candy for residents of Wisconsin.

Although Butterfinger edged Starburst out in 2018, it was Starburst that was Wisconsin's most popular Halloween candy the year before.

Skittles was the most popular Halloween candy across the country, with the ever-beloved M&M's, Snickers, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Starburst rounding out the top five.

While the above candies dominated a large section of the country, Jolly Ranchers made a surprise appearance as the favorite treat in Arizona, Georgia, and Utah.

Which has to leave you feeling a little sorry for children in the Jolly Rancher hotbeds.

Ninety-five percent of the 179 million Americans who celebrate Halloween will purchase candy for the holiday, according to the study. On average they will spend $27, and nearly 25 percent of all those purchases are made online.
