GREENDALE, WI — Greendale school officials and dedicated parents are looking for volunteers later this week to help build a new playground at Canterbury Elementary School.

Organizers say some roles will involve heavy physical labor such as unloading a semi truck, mixing and hauling concrete, as well as assembling and installing playground structures.

"This is a great opportunity to make a wonderful outdoor play area for the Canterbury students and the whole community," organizers wrote. To sign up, follow this link to the Canterbury Playground Build. The playground build is scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

Greendale School District said funds from the most recent schools referendum as well as fundraising dollars from the Canterbury Parent Teacher Organization are being used to pay for the project. District and school administrators, construction partners and PTO leaders helped to determine the size and scope of the new structure.

The new structure was designed and purchased from Lee Recreation. The cost was $63,312. District officials said the community build on Aug. 20-21 is a way to save on installation costs.

Greendale School District officials said they're working with the local health department to figure out what recess will look like once students return to school.

"Typically our play structures are available to students during recess as well as during non-school days. We are still working with public health authorities to figure out what recess will look like when our students return to school in September," Kitty Goyette, with the Greendale School District said to Patch this week.
