The 68th Street bridge over I-894 closed in late October 2019. Transit officials said the overpass was built in 1966. Although various rehabilitation improvements have taken place over the years, with the last being a concrete deck overlay in 1989, conditions deteriorated to the point where it needed to be replaced.

At the time, transportation officials rated the condition of the bridge as a four on a nine-point scale. According to the Department of Transportation, that designation means the overpass is currently experiencing "advanced section loss, deterioration, spalling, or scour."
