GREENFIELD, WI — Project leaders heading up a new recreation trail in Greenfield say a key grant has been awarded to the city to build a new recreational trail.

The project is called the Powerline Trail, and the first phase the path will begin with a connection to the Oak Leaf Trail at 105th and Cold Spring Road. The trail will extend east in the WE Energies power line corridor to 43rd St., and eventually all the way to Lake Michigan. The corridor is located south of Howard Ave.

Project leaders submitted a grant to fund the construction of the trail in July 2019, on the hope that the Wisconsin Department of Transportation The Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement program (CMAQ) grant funding would be awarded to the city in order to cover about 80 percent of the cost to build the trail.

This week, Renee Rollman, Engineering Specialist with the City of Greenfield said the city was awarded the grant in order to build the first phase of the trail.

Organizers say the new trail will allow users to walk, run and bike for exercise and transportation, connecting them to places they want to go, including homes, businesses, workplaces, parks and the existing Milwaukee County Oak Leaf Trail system.
