Greenfield Cannon Shooter Has Fourth-Of-July Fine Upheld

Each Fourth of July for the last 44 years, Frank Markel would begin the day with a cannon salute using Civil War-era cannons

GREENFIELD, WI -- A man who considers himself a patriot and cannon collector had his municipal fine upheld for firing canons in the front yard of his Greenfield house on the Fourth of July.

Frank Markel lives at the end of Shady Lane Court in Greenfield — a one-block-long cul-de-sac in an otherwise quiet neighborhood.

Each Fourth of July for the last 44 years, Markel would begin the day with a canon salute using Civil War-era cannons stationed in front yard.

According to a JSOnline report, Markel was fined $3,000 this year for shooting off his cannons. The $3,000 fine was later reduced to $1,000 by a Wauwatosa municipal judge. The case was transferred from Greenfield to Wauwatosa earlier last year.

Neighbors said the cannon fire upset area residents, including small children.
