GREENFIELD, WI— A Greenfield man's longstanding tradition of firing Civil War cannons off from his front yard each 4th of July will again not return to the neighborhood this year, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Frank Markel started firing his cannons off in the front yard of a Milwaukee home over 40 years ago and has since moved to Greenfield, but for the second year in a row, Markel's cannons will not boom at all in the city, according to the Journal Sentinel report.

Markel managed to log a few years of the tradition in his Greenfield neighborhood, but police stopped him in 2019 from continuing the demonstration, according to the Journal Sentinel report.

After police stepped in Markel started to lobby Greenfield to legalize his cannon display, but pandemic regulations in 2020 again prevented the tradition from continuing, according to the Journal Sentinel report.

This year, Markel will instead travel with his cannons to Clear Lake for a display at the Heritage Days celebration parade, he told the Journal Sentinel.
