Heat the No. 1 Weather-Related Killer in Wisconsin

With temperatures in the 90s all week, and heat indexes at or near 100, here are some tips to beat the heat in Greenfield.

Did you know that summer heat waves have been the biggest weather-related killers in Wisconsin?

According to the state’s Department of Health Services, 27 people died in Wisconsin as a result of heat-related issues; so far this year, a person in their late 80s died in Juneau County last month.

That number could increase this week with temperatures in the mid-90s, and heat indexes reaching a potentially dangerous 95-100 degrees.

So how do you beat the heat?

“Always seek air conditioning wherever possible, whether it be with a friend or relative, at a community business, or at the local library,” Greenfield Health Director Darren Rausch said.

Another local air-conditioned facility – Southridge Mall – is encouraging people to stop in this week, according to Facebook:

“It's going to be another hot one today! If you're looking for a place to keep cool, come to the mall - We're open until 9:00pm & are a great 'cooling spot'!”

People are reminded to:

  • Never leave individuals, especially children or any household pets, in a parked car – even briefly.
  • Keep your living space cool. Cover windows to keep the sun from shining in. If you don’t have an air conditioner, open windows to let air circulate. When it’s hotter than 95 degrees, use fans to blow hot air out of the window rather than to blow hot air on your body. Basements or ground floors are often cooler than upper floors.
  • Slow down and limit physical activity. Plan outings or exertion for the early morning or after dark when temperatures are cooler.
  • Drink plenty of water and eat lightly. Don’t wait for thirst, but instead drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid alcohol or caffeine and stay away from hot, heavy meals.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Add a hat or umbrella to keep your head cool…and don’t forget sunscreen!
  • Taking a cool shower or bath will cool you down faster than air conditioning.
  • Check on neighbors throughout the day who may need assistance to protect themselves against dangerous temperatures.
