Layton Ave. Project Would Close Road Down For One Year

GREENFIELD, WI — Transportation officials want to shut down a busy stretch of W. Layton Ave. in Greenfield to make way for a construction project that would expand and upgrade the roadway over a period of one year.

Milwaukee County Department of Transportation officials are holding a virtual meeting for Greenfield residents to share their concerns over the proposed reconstruction project that would upgrade a stretch of W. Layton Ave. from S. 43rd Street to S. 27th Street.

The existing stretch of W. Layton Ave. has two 12-foot wide lanes in each direction with a 10-foot wide asphalt or gravel shoulder. The shoulder acts as a bus stop for Route 55 and there are no pedestrian or bicycle accommodations.

Transportation officials say the proposed project would convert W. Layton Avenue from a 4-lane divided, rural roadway with asphalt and gravel shoulders to a 4-lane divided, urban roadway with curb and gutter, sidewalks and on-street bike accommodations. The proposed pavement would be either asphalt or concrete.

According to the department, construction is expected to begin in the Spring of 2021 and is estimated to last for about a year.
