GREENFIELD, WI — A 30-year-old man was arrested on the night of his birthday after police in Greenfield say they had to disable his car in a high-speed chase, and later caught him with alcohol and drugs in the car.

According to Greenfield police department reports, an officer was on patrol just after 2 a.m. on the 5600 block of S. 27th Street when he saw a blue Honda Accord without its lights on, and also with license plates that didn't match the car.

The officer tried pulling the driver over, only to have the driver put on his four-way yellow flashers and continue to drive away from the officer, reports stated.

According to police reports, the driver sped up to 55 miles per hour on a local 25-mile-per-hour road to try to get a way. When the driver sped up, the officer conducted a pursuit intervention technique on the car on W. Grange Ave. and S. Honey Creek Drive. In the maneuver, captured on the officer's squad camera, the officer turns his squad into the rear of the fleeing vehicle, causing it to spin out, and to a stop.

When police questioned the man, he told officers that he wasn't aware he was driving without his lights on, and wanted to drive back to his cousin's house before he pulled over because he "would feel more comfortable" getting pulled over there, reports stated.

According to police reports, an officer searched the man's car and found a small amount of what was believed to be marijuana and cocaine. When the officer questioned the man about it, he said, "it's my birthday," according to police.

When the officer questioned him further, he said he intended to get together with his cousins to observe his birthday. He denied that the apparent marijuana and cocaine were his, reports stated.

According to reports, the man was booked on suspicion of drunken driving after a preliminary breath test reported a 0.14 blood alcohol concentration — greater than the legal limit for drunken driving in Wisconsin. Reports also stated he was booked on suspicion of fleeing an officer, possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana. He was also cited for several traffic violations.
