Five Do-It-Yourself Fair Foods

Make your favorite festival treats at home with the help of Meijer

With the cancellation of every major festival this summer, have you found yourself craving some foods from your favorite fairs? All of us at Meijer know how you feel, so we’ve curated a list of our favorite fair foods, and what you’ll need to create your own at home. Though the fairs and festivals are cancelled, your summer celebrations (and snacks) don’t have to be.

Funnel Cake: Did you know funnel cakes first appeared in medieval cookbooks? Us either! Nothing screams fair food like the funnel cake and turns out – it’s pretty easy to make. To make this fair treat, you’ll need; eggs, milk, vanilla extract, flour, sugar and oil for frying. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, water and vanilla, add your dry ingredients, and then add batter to the frying pan. Fry until golden brown, drain excess oil, and you are ready to enjoy fresh fair funnel cake from home!

Corn Dogs: Another deep-fried delicacy – the corn dog! Our mouths are watering at the thought of a fair favorite corn dog. To make these corn dogs at home, you'll need; cornbread mix, flour, an egg, milk, hot dogs, onion powder, chili powder, paprika, cumin and oil for frying. Mix together dry ingredients and wet ingredients separately, then combine. Dip the hot dogs into this mixture and fry in the oil for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once they’re golden brown, drain excess grease on paper towels and enjoy!

Fair Corn: Fresh corn on the cob is still considered a serving of vegetables even when it’s covered in cheese and other toppings, right? Fair corn is a great way to serve fresh, Wisconsin grown corn. You’ll need fresh ears of corn, mayo, sour cream, cotija cheese, limes, cilantro, chili powder, olive oil, salt and cracked pepper. Husk and season the corn, separately combine mayo chili powder cheese and lime juice. When the corn is finished grilling, cut kernels from the cob and mix into sauce. Serve with a lime wedge and top with cilantro.

Cheesecake on a Stick: Missing the freeing feeling of eating fair food on a stick? We’ve got you covered. Cheesecake on a stick will have you feeling back at the fair in no time. To make this fair favorite, you’ll need graham crackers, butter, cream cheese, sugar, bittersweet chocolate and heavy cream. Grind the graham crackers in a food processor with melted butter, then spread the crumbs into a pan. While this is cooling, mix cream cheese, heavy cream, vanilla and sugar until combined. Pour this mixture into the cooled crumbs and let sit in the fridge until hardened. Score the cheesecake, add popsicle sticks, and place in the freezer until frozen. Before serving, dip the frozen cheesecake into melted chocolate and enjoy!

Kettle Corn: Perhaps you’re looking for a lighter snack, and for this, we suggest kettle corn! Sure, you might not be eating your kettle corn out of an obscenely large bag that you’d typically get at the fair, but we promise this is a close second! This one is by far the easiest recipe. Before getting started, make sure you have coconut oil, popcorn kernels, salt and sugar. All you need to do is heat up coconut oil and add popcorn kernels. Once the oil sizzles, sprinkle sugar over the popcorn. Once the popping slows, add salt, and you’re ready to serve!
