Make The Most Of Summer Through July Academy In Milwaukee

What do successful students have in common? Summer learning! Students who learn and read over the summer start stronger in fall. Strengthen your skills in July Academy!

July Academy will be held July 6 to 31, 2020, from 8:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. All courses will take place online. Students will need a laptop or Chromebook. Contact your child’s school to receive a Chromebook if you have not already done so.

To register, visit the MPS Summer Academy web page. Registration deadline is June 26, 2020. After enrolling, families should check the parent portal on Infinite Campus to see their child’s schedule for July. Families and students should watch their email for important information and instructions for logging in to summer coursework.

July Offerings

English language learners will be supported by licensed English as a second language teachers.

Kindergarten—Grade 5: Virtual camps are offering world languages, math, science, social studies, art, music, drama, and real-world superheroes. Students can sign up for two courses offered virtually at 8:30 A.M. and 10:30 A.M., Monday through Friday. Students from MPS bilingual schools will be placed in virtual bilingual math and reading camps.

Grades 6–7: Math and English classes are available to help students catch up and strengthen skills.

Grade 8: Students can sign up for a high school credit acceleration class (see below) or can take a Civics course to prepare for the high school Citizenship course required for graduation. Note: After registering, 8th-grade students will receive an email survey to select an acceleration course or academic enrichment class.

Montessori camp is available online for current MPS Montessori students.

Extended school year (ESY) is available in July; enrollment will be determined by each student’s IEP team.

High School: Credit recovery is available for students who need to retake a class (most subjects are available). Credit acceleration is offered for students who need to take a class for the first time to stay on track for graduation. New this year: High school students can take select Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes to fulfill a new graduation requirement (one credit of career coursework). CTE courses vary by school, so this is a great chance to take a class that may not be available in a student’s own school.

Summer CTE Courses (High School)

Health Careers Exploration: Introduces students to a broad range of health careers. The course covers five pathways: diagnostic services, therapeutic services, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development.

ProStart I (Culinary Arts): ProStart is for students who are serious about a career in any aspect of the food service industry or for students who plan an advanced education in culinary arts. Students can enter a two-year program while in high school to receive certification from the National Restaurant Association.

Principles of Hospitality: In this overview of the current hospitality and tourism industry, students explore traveler motivation and consumer needs, the industry's economic and environmental impacts, domestic and international travel, and sales and careers in tourism.

Career Exploration: This class helps students explore career pathways, understand qualifications and education needed, identify personal skills and interests, and develop plans to follow through on career interests.

Entrepreneurship: Students learn the basics of planning and launching a business. Topics include successful entrepreneurs, creating a business plan, generating ideas, economics, financial strategies, and promoting and marketing a company.

Introduction to Business: Students learn the principles of business using real-world examples. Areas of study include economics, costs and profit, managing money, taxes and credit, financing a business, and techniques for planning, executing, and marketing a business.
