SHOREWOOD, WI — A total of six people, including three swimmers and three boaters, were rescued off Atwater Beach in Shorewood Monday afternoon.

Rescue personnel were sent to Atwater Beach Monday on a report that three swimmers were between 150 and 200 yards offshore in Lake Michigan and in need of rescue, North Shore Fire Department officials said. At the same time, three boaters were in need of rescue after one person on the boat called authorities saying they, and the swimmers, needed rescue.

North Shore Fire Department officials said a lifeguard assigned to Atwater Beach used a rescue board to swim out to the three simmers. The lifeguard managed to bring them to shore in the 4200 block of N. Lake Drive.

At the same time, fire officials said the Milwaukee Fire Department, Milwaukee Police Department and United States Coast Guard Rescue Boats responded to the boat where the swimmers had originated from and removed three people from the boat, and brought them to shore.

Once the boaters were brought safely back to Atwater Beach, officials said they were reunited with the three swimmers who were rescued from the water. All those who were rescued refused emergency medical evaluation or treatment, fire officials said.
