Bulk Of Shorewood's Increase In Stolen Cars Are Hyundai Or Kia

Shorewood is facing a rise in stolen cars. The Police Department has steering wheel locks available for cars most vulnerable to theft.

SHOREWOOD, WI— Village residents that own a Kia or Hyundai can now get a wheel lock from the Police Department to help deter the growing trend of stolen cars in Shorewood, the Department said on Facebook.

Since the beginning of 2021, 22 vehicles have been stolen in Shorewood, the Department said. Of those, 18 were a Kia or Hyundai. In general, car thefts have been on the rise in Shorewood, with break-ins happening at much higher rates than in years past.

Hyundai models from 2015-2021 and Kia models from 2011-2021 are the most vulnerable, according to the Department's post. Shorewood Police Department said it has obtained wheel locks to distribute to combat this uptick in stolen cars. The locks go on top of a car's steering wheel to deter theft.

Individuals that want a wheel lock must show proof of vehicle ownership and Shorewood residency. While Kia and Hyundai models are the most affected by recent vehicle theft, village residents with a different vehicle can call about the wheel locks, the Department wrote.
