More Than 90 Shorewood Businesses Received Emergency Funds

SHOREWOOD, WI — More than 90 Shorewood businesses were awarded funds through the village's Emergency Business Assistance fund in May, according to village officials.

Earlier this year, the Community Development Authority and Business Improvement District approached the Village Board to set up an Emergency Business Assistance Fund, citing a need to support Shorewood businesses amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Many businesses encountered economic hardships during the layoff, which happened after Gov. Tony Evers and the Department of Health Services closed all nonessential businesses amid fears of spreading the coronavirus at too quick a rate across Wisconsin communities.

Village officials had $300,000 at their disposal to distribute to business owners through a grant program.

Grants were based on two months of rental or rental equivalent costs for up to $5,000 per month. For an owner-operated business, a monthly rental equivalent was based on 2 percent of the 2019 assessed property value that applied to business operations.
