SHOREWOOD, WI — Shorewood has joined a small group of municipalities in Wisconsin in banning gay conversion therapy, reports say. The village joins Milwaukee, Madison, Eau Claire and Cudahy, according to a Milwaukee Independent report.

The Milwaukee Independent reported Cavalier Johnson, a Milwaukee alderman, as saying "Conversion therapy can pose critical health risks to lesbian, gay and bisexual people including depression, suicidal tendencies, substance abuse, stress and disconnection with family and friends," citing the American Psychological Association.

The practice of gay conversion therapy has been discredited by medical and psychological organizations, according to Our Lives Magazine.
