SHOREWOOD, WI —The last few months have been eventful for Shorewood business owner and periodic Food Network contestant Kimberly Hall.

A longtime professional cake and dessert maker, Hall opened Signature Sweets, 3801 N. Oakland Ave., in December in the former location of Miss Cupcake. Hall had previously operated Signature Sweets as a catering entity, according to OnMilwaukee.com. Signature Sweets offers Hall's custom-decorated cakes along with baked goods like muffins, cookies, cupcakes and mini cakes.

Earlier this month, Hall's business got a boost when she was named as a recipient of a Back2Business recovery grant from Fiserv, which partnered with the Milwaukee Bucks for the program. The grants support small, often Black and minority-owned businesses through financial assistance, business expertise, leading technology solutions and strategic partnerships.

Later this month, Hall can be seen on a Food Network show called "The Big Bake," which airs at 10 p.m. on March 15. It is hardly Hall's first time on the network. In fact, she previously appeared on seven different Food Network baking shows: "Hometown Showdown," "Cupcake Wars," "Sugar Dome," "Macy's Thanksgiving Cake Spectacular," "Holiday Wars," and "Halloween Wars," the latter show Hall appeared on twice.

Hall's latest appearance, on "The Big Bake," actually was made for Food Network Canada in 2019 and aired on that network last March, according to the Journal Sentinel. For Hall's episode, three teams of cake artists had to create a cake based on the theme "Some Bunny Wants Cake," along with a tasting element that incorporated vegetables.

For the tasting element, Hall and her team baked kale apple cupcakes, which have been available at Hall's shop this week.

"(On the show) we were all rushing around like mad scientists, trying to figure out how we could incorporate a vegetable into a cupcake - something that's supposed to be delicious," Hall, a Greendale High grad, told the Journal Sentinel. "So, that was a challenge in itself."
