SHOREWOOD, WI — In June, construction will begin on several Shorewood schools after voters approved a $65 referendum in 2019. Although it means some welcome upgrades for students, staff and teachers, the construction will impact a popular summer youth recreation project in the village.

According to district officials, the Shorewood School District will be busy this summer with multiple construction projects at Atwater and Lake Bluff Elementary Schools and Shorewood High School. Although district officials say they're welcome to see the construction projects get underway, they say it will mean challenges for the Shorewood Recreation and Community Services Department's Summer 2020 Home Base and Kids Club.

"This has made it necessary to change how we structure our programs and will limit the amount of participants we are able to accommodate," district officials said. "One of the biggest changes is that now you can only sign up for Home Base and Kids Club on a weekly basis, not daily as in years past. Home Base, Jr. Kids Club, and grades 4-6 Kids Club all have been relocated to Shorewood Intermediate School. Atwater Kids Club grades 1-3 will remain at Atwater West Playground."
