SHOREWOOD, WI — Three days after announcing that the front yards of all Shorewood properties would get a small American flag in honor of Independence Day, the plans have been canceled.

In lieu of the traditional Independence Day festivities, which were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the Shorewood Foundation's volunteer board of directors sought to place a small American flag on the parkway in front of every Shorewood residence.

"In Shorewood, the Fourth of July has always been a celebration of community as much as of history", said Alan Purintun, Foundation board president in a statement last week. "We hope this small gesture, touching every member of the community, ably reflects that spirit."

On Monday, members of the Shorewood Foundation said, "prompted by thoughtful, heartfelt feedback received in recent days, we have re-evaluated and changed our plans."

The announcement effectively ended the flag-planting effort.
