Shorewood Snapshot: School Officials Vote on New School Chief's Contract; First Ride Event

School officials vote on new school chief contract — In addition to voting on a contract for , with a salary of $150,000, school officials are scheduled to vote on a proposed employee handbook, among other agenda items.

— Shorewood police and bike experts from will give local children a crash course in losing their bicycle training wheels at the second annual First Ride event, Saturday from noon to 3 p.m., in the parking lot.

The course is designed to help children 10 and younger learn to balance and feel comfortable without training wheels. It’s based on an innovative “balancing first” method that involves removing the bike pedals and lowering the seat during practice. The event is free and will take place at 2100 E. Capitol Dr.

Parents must register by Monday, by visiting the Shorewood Business Improvement District’s website.

Greater Shorewood Bikers will be on hand to help parents get used to riding their bicycles with a child trailer.

The event is sponsored by the Shorewood BID, with secondary sponsorship by Rainbow Jersey, the and PNC Bank.

— will play host to an art event for children, youth and families running the whole week.

Monday through Wednesday, Door County papermaking artist Kirsten Christianson will teach the art of making handmade paper items to take home. Particpants will also have the opportunity to contribute words and ideas for a community art mural.

On Thursday, participants will work on collage projects using beautiful handmade papers and materials from the mural-making project. These images will be used as announcements for the community art piece.

All sessions start at 6:30 p.m. at 1225 E. Olive St.

No artistic expertise or previous experience needed.

The event is for adults and families with children aged 3 to 15. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult (parent, grandparent, etc.).

Governmental meetings — Shorewood has several committee meetings on the docket this week.

The Parks Commission is scheduled to meet at 5:30 p.m. and the Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Committee at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Library Board will meet on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. and the Village Marketing Committee Thursday morning at 8.
