'West Side Story' Among Upcoming Shorewood Productions

Shorewood Drama recently announced its lineup for next school year, which includes a nice mix of comedy, drama and historical nonfiction.

The season will kick off with November performances of the “The 25thAnnual Putnam County Bee.” This hilarious show tells the story of overachievers vying for the spelling bee championship of a lifetime, focusing on six young people who learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. The musical will feature 15-20 student actors playing a charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time. The fall performances, which will be held in the SHS Auditorium, will run from November 1-3, with two evening performances on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2, and a 2 p.m. matinée performance on Nov. 3.

In February, the department will present “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.” This play tells the story of the more than 15,000 Jewish children who passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp during WWII and centers on one of the survivors, Raja, who, having lived through the camp, taught the children, gave them hope and created a world of laughter, flowers and butterflies behind the barbed wire. The play is based on the book by Celeste Raspanti and is inspired by the drawings and writings of the children in Terezin. Performances of “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” will take place on February 7-9, 2014. Like the fall production, there will be two evening shows and one Sunday matinée show.

Finally, in May, the season will wrap up with “West Side Story.” The show, one of the most popular Broadway musicals of the 20th century, tells the story of two young idealistic lovers who find themselves caught between warring street gangs, and must fight a world of hate, violence and prejudice to keep their love alive. “West Side Story” performances will be held from May 9-11 and May 15-17, 2014.
