📰 News we're reading

1. Officials: Cheyenne airport maxed out, forcing 97% of local flyers to Denver (capcity.news) — Cheyenne Regional Airport is packed, yet 97% of local air travelers still drive to Denver for more flight options, limiting growth despite strong demand. City leaders reviewed a 20-year master plan that tackles airline constraints, needed facility upgrades, and safety fixes, with a final public open house expected in late February before the plan is submitted in March.

2. Wyoming Public Television seeks $6.6M increase in state funding to offset federal cuts, upgrade emergency alert system (county10.com) — From a hearing in Cheyenne Public Television is asking lawmakers for $6.6 million more in the 2027–28 budget to replace lost federal support and modernize the aging statewide emergency alert system residents rely on. CEO Joanna Kail told the Joint Appropriations Committee the request won’t expand staffing but is needed to keep life-saving TV and radio alerts working when Wyoming faces emergencies.

3. DFS seeks millions in state support following federal cuts (newslj.com) — State budget talks in Cheyenne could reshape how Wyoming funds food assistance, foster youth support, and vulnerable adult services, as DFS seeks $11.5 million to offset federal cuts. Lawmakers are weighing higher state SNAP costs, a new SUN Bucks summer food program for 32,000 kids, and expanded help for former foster youth and at-risk adults.

4. Democrat senators blast Wyoming's U.S. attorney as unqualified MAGA loyalist, Jan. 6 supporter (oilcity.news) — U.S. Senate Democrats are sharply criticizing Darin Smith, the Trump administration’s nominee for U.S. attorney in Wyoming, over his lack of criminal trial experience and his comments about Jan. 6, even as Wyoming’s Republican delegation backs him. Smith, a former Laramie County GOP chair once photographed speaking at a 2021 Conservative Corner meeting in Cheyenne, is already serving as interim U.S. attorney while his full confirmation advances.
