Mountain Brook High School Alum Sam Everette Talks Sewanee Football Win

Former Spartans player Sam Everette scored two touchdowns in the Tigers' landmark matchup against Kenyon.

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — RB Sam Everette knew what to expect when he left his hometown for Sewanee's football program: the same caliber of players as he had faced playing for a 7A team like Mountain Brook Spartans, but a much faster pace. And with the Tigers new head coach Travis Rundle at the helm, the pace only quickened as the team adjusted to the new regime.

But all the hard work paid off when the Tigers ended a 19-game losing streak in their game against the Kenyon Lords 45-20 on Saturday. The game was a personal win for Everette as well, who in his collegiate debut ran in two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to solidify the win.

"It felt really great to be a part of [the win], but this was really about the seniors and the juniors on the team," Everette said. "They got dealt the short end of the stick for a while."

While Everette was proud of the win on his team's behalf, he said a lot of the credit for the win belongs with the coaching staff.

"They were a huge part of our win," he said. "I think we're all adjusting really well, and the coaches are working hard with our best interests in mind. Everyone is on the same page about winning."

Everette said that the win signals a new era for Sewanee's program, but that the work doesn't stop here.

"I'm really proud of the guys on the team, and I think we did really well, but there are always areas where we can improve," Everette said.

The Tigers will be on the road for the next three weeks, and will face rival Washington and Lee Saturday with a noon kickoff.
