Mountain Brook Residents Report Blackmail Letter Scam

Letters of this nature have been reported across the country, but authorities insist that it's just a scam.

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — The Mountain Brook Police Department issued a warning through its Facebook page about a scam that has been circulating through the community. Some residents have reported receiving blackmail letters from unknown persons requesting money, but authorities insist the letters are fake.

The letters are all similar, making slight changes for the recipients name and the amount of money requested. The letter also includes instructions for non-traceable payments. Letters of this nature have been reported across the country.

The police department said that if a resident receives a letter, they should not respond but report it immediately to law enforcement.
