MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — With the school year over and mask mandates easing around the city, Mountain Brook Schools had an excess of masks left from the school year — more than 2,000, actually — which the system promptly donated to Children's of Alabama.

The white cloth masks were delivered to the hospital Thursday, and are ideal for Children's, as they will allow for patients to draw and customize their masks as many students at Mountain Brook schools did during the year.

“We really wanted to find someone that could use them and benefit from having them,” Dr. Lisa Beckham said. “The idea originated last year when we donated extra gloves to UAB at the beginning of the pandemic.”

Just over a year ago, MBS spent the early parts of the COVID-19 pandemic partnering with local groups to identify supply sources for the community. It’s something that Beckham says is in the nature of Mountain Brook.

“Oftentimes, our students are the ones leading the charge to help groups or people in need,” she said. “It just reflects the giving spirit of our community."
