Mountain Brook Students Petition To Get Day Off After Halloween
An online petition to get Nov. 1 off school this year was launched by some Mountain Brook students.
MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — With Halloween falling on a Thursday this year, that means children must return to school the following day despite having participated in Halloween activities way after dark. This is why some Mountain Brook students have launched an online petition to get Nov. 1 off school.
The petition was launched this week on change.org, following the lead of students in both Vestavia Hills and Hoover, who have launched similar campaigns.
The petition, started by Coleman Taylor, states, "Halloween is one of the best holidays of the year. Getting to stay out late and have fun is a major part of it. Making us go to school November 1st will leave us all exhausted. That would affect our grades, etc. We should all be able to stay our later and have fun while it lasts. Vestavia Hills High School has already gotten this Friday off after 2500 students signed a petition for it. This would be a great decision and be beneficial to all students and teachers."

Although Vestavia Hills students did obtain more than 3,000 signatures on its petition, no announcement has been made by the school system confirming cancellation of the school day Friday.
Hoover Schools issued a statement saying, "We have no plans to modify this year’s calendar for a non-emergency event."
