Opossum 'Birmingham Jill' To Fill In For Groundhog Day At Zoo

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — Groundhog Day is Tuesday and the Birmingham Zoo will have a guest substitute to predict the coming of spring. Birmingham Jill will stand in for the groundhog Birmingham Bill for 2021.

Due to Birmingham Bill's hibernation schedule, the zoo's owls last year assumed the duties of predicting when spring will arrive in the Magic City.

Birmingham Jill will make her prediction virtually on the Birmingham Zoo’s Facebook and YouTube channel at 10 a.m. for the annual Groundhog Day ceremony. The Birmingham Zoo began its Groundhog Day tradition in 1990, but for the last four years, the zoo has had a stand-in for Birmingham Bill.
