Red Mountain Theatre Presents Human Rights New Works Festival
Red Mountain Theatre Company aims to explore issues and emotions through art with its new festival.
BIRMINGHAM, AL — Red Mountain Theatre, in partnership with the Jefferson County Memorial project and the Magic City Acceptance Academy, announced the performance of two works as part of the Human Rights New Works Festival.
Through the Human Rights New Works Festival, which typically would feature more than one performance per weekend, Red Mountain Theatre is working to spark world-changing conversations – one individual at a time.
The shows — “Memoral” and “Pink Unicorn,” — performed as a small taste of the festival, will center on relevant social issues including racism and LBGTQ acceptance.

“Memorial,” a theatrical experience that examines the scourge of lynchings in Jefferson County, from the 1890s through the 1930s, will be read in the Discovery Theatre at Red Mountain Theatre’s Arts Campus at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 21 and Saturday, May 22.
The play commemorates lives lost to senseless racially motivated violence in a dark time in American history.

“Pink Unicorn” focuses on Christian widow Trisha Lee, who’s life in a conservative Texas town is thrown into turmoil when her teenaged daughter announces she is "gender queer" and starts a chapter of the Gay and Straight Alliance at the local high school.
In April, it was announced that Just One More Productions will produce a film version of “Pink Unicorn” starring Alice Ripley. Like “Memorial,” “Pink Unicorn” will be read in the Discovery Theatre of the Arts Campus. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12.
“These shows and the issues they tackle head on are extremely important to our society” said Red Mountain Theatre Executive Director Keith Cromwell. “Theatre is a powerful way to send a message, and we’re thrilled that our new Arts Campus will serve as a vehicle to make these brilliant works of art available to all.”
Tickets to each show are $10 and can be purchased online. A portion of ticket sales from these performances will go to the Jefferson County Memorial Project and Magic City Acceptance Academy.
In accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, each show will be at 50 percent capacity and facemasks will be required.
Additional information about each show can be found at the theatre’s website.
