MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — This month's Q&A with Mountain Brook city manager Sam Gaston includes a common question from readers — anything sidewalk related — but also included some issues surrounding speeding on Brookwood road and a construction site on Old Leeds.

Here are Gaston's answers to Patch readers' questions this month:

Can anything be done about the uneven sidewalks along Montclair Road from the post office down to Calton Hill? There are many sections that are raised up, a section in front of the post office is gravel, and an AT&T station is being undermined and dumping onto the sidewalk. Many people use this sidewalk and have tripped.

I rode up to Montclair Road and walked the sidewalks on the north side. Yes, there is some work that needs to be done. Our Public Works crews will clean-up the wash from the AT & T cabinet site today, AT & T has been contacted by the city to complete landscaping at this site to reduce the erosion onto our sidewalks. I will follow-up with them in a few weeks to see if it has been done.

In addition, several sections of sidewalks will have their toe-stumpers ground down by our contractor and our Public Works Dept will replace a couple of section of sidewalks in a few months as they have a long list of projects on their plate. Concrete is in scarce demand and the earliest we can get concrete is July 26th. Also, it seems that the BWWB or perhaps one of their contractors has cut the sidewalks directly in front of the Post Office. We will coordinate its repair with them.

The construction on Old Leeds near Shady Lane is causing what looks like a mudslide every time we get rain. Is this something that the city can address?

This construction site is in good shape per our Building Official. We have experienced some heavy rains recently that has affected most all active job sites in the city. Our Building Official will go out and double check this site.

There is so much speeding on Brookwood Road, especially from Brookleeds to Cross Hill, and I wish police would crack down on it.

Our Police Dept. is currently conducting a traffic/speed study in this location. Once the results are in, they will be turned over to our traffic engineering consultant, Skipper Consultants, to determine if a 3-way stop is warranted at the Brookwood/Brookleeds intersection or if other traffic control devices/signs are needed. Our Police Dept is conducting extra patrols and enforcement along this section of Brookwood Road.
