UAB To Open New COVID-19 Vaccine Site In Center Point

After a slow start, Alabama is catching up to other states in its COVID-19 vaccine roll-out, due in part to UAB's drive-thru vaccine sites.

MONTGOMERY, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham is opening another COVID-19 vaccine distribution site in the Birmingham metro. Cathedral of the Cross OAH Church in Center Point is expected to become the latest vaccine site in a matter of weeks.

UAB operates vaccine distribution at Parker High School, UAB Highlands, Spain Auditorium on UAB’s campus and the Hoover Met. Since starting the drive-thru vaccination sites, UAB has administered more than 90,000 doses of the vaccine.

After a slow start, Alabama is gradually catching up to other states in its distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. As of Wednesday, more than 1.1 million doses of the vaccine had been distributed statewide.

More than 410,000 people in Alabama are fully immunized, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.

The addition of the new single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine has made distribution a little easier in the state, although the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are the most prevalent.

To date, fewer than 5,000 of the doses given out in Alabama are from Johnson & Johnson.

As of Wednesday, Alabama is still in Phase 1b of the vaccine distribution plan. Those eligible to receive the vaccine currently in Alabama:

  • Reaidents age 65 and older
  • Residents and staff at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
  • Frontline health care workers
  • First responders and other critical workers listed in Phase 1b of the state's vaccine plan
  • People living and working in group settings such as homeless shelters and group home
