Canyon Crest Academy Is Doubly Proud of its SAT Perfect-Scorers

Canyon Crest Academy in Carmel Valley recently boasted of having earned the highest public school API score in San Diego County—for the second year in a row.

Sunday’s U-T San Diego spotlighted another double achievement at the school on Village Center Loop Road: 17-year-old twins scoring perfect 2400s on the SAT.

Marie and Tina Vachovsky, daughters of Bulgarian immigrants, both recorded the rare feat on the college-admission test.

“The Vachovsky girls are San Diego natives, born 5 minutes apart,” reported John Wilkens in a front-page story. “What they like about being twins, they said, is always having somebody to do things with. When they aren’t studying—they carry 4.5 GPAs at Canyon Crest, where 80 percent of the graduates go on to four-year colleges—they do oil paintings and play the piano and surf and play tennis and go to rock concerts.”

Marie was quoted as saying: “Even when we were kids, we were always able to keep ourselves entertained. Our parents were busy, so it was probably a good thing that we could stay occupied.”

Parents Ivan and Lilian Vachovsky came to America in 1993 with two sons, said the U-T report.

The news spread quickly Sunday, with one L.A. blog headlining its story “Smartypants Twins Get Matching Perfect SAT Scores.”

Canyon Crest Academy is a public high school with nearly 1,900 students in the San Dieguito Union High School District.

History teacher Timothy Stiven told the U-T that the twins have “a unique talent to grasp significant amounts of information and be able to use it. It’s one thing to remember. It’s another to use it.”
