City Of Del Mar: Council Action July 12 On Utility Undergrounding Districts

The City Council on July 12 is scheduled to vote on plans to form utility undergrounding districts along south Stratford Court and Crest Canyon.

Approval would initiate up to two years’ worth of design work and add momentum to a City-wide program that was suspended during COVID-19. Construction is likely to begin during the summer or fall of 2023 and last about one year.

The Undergrounding Program envisions parceling Del Mar into eight districts to remove utility poles and replace overhead cables with underground lines.

Utility Undergrounding District 1A (Stratford Court South) would remove 7,650 lineal feet of overhead  cables serving 214 homes and buildings on Stratford Court between 4th and 12th streets.  

Utility Undergrounding District X1A (Crest Canyon) calls for removing 11,200 lineal feet of overhead cables serving 114 structures in residential areas along portions of Crest Road and San Dieguito Drive.

In 2016, Del Mar voters identified utility undergrounding as a priority with the approval of Measure Q. The one-cent sales tax measure is generating the funds to finance the project.   

In May, the City Council approved the formation of a small utility undergrounding district on Tewa Court and the upper portion of 10th Street. Construction in that district is expected to begin during the first quarter of 2022.

The City Council’s remote meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. July 12.
